Pierre Kompany is a Congolese-born Belgian engineer, inventor, and politician who made history in 2018 when he became the first Black mayor of a Belgian municipality. He is also widely known as the father of footballer Vincent Kompany, but his own journey — from political prisoner in Zaire to elected mayor in Brussels — is a story that stands entirely on its own.

Early Life and Escape from Zaire

Pierre Kompany was born on 8 September 1947 in Costermansville, now known as Bukavu, in what was then the Belgian Congo. In his younger years he played as an attacker for Congolese club TP Mazembe, a well-known side in Central African football.

His life took a dangerous turn when he became involved in protests against the dictatorship of Mobutu Sese Seko, who ruled Zaire with an iron grip. Pierre was imprisoned for more than a year as a direct consequence of that political activism. After his release, remaining in the country was not a realistic option. He fled and arrived in Belgium in 1975 as a political refugee, initially without documents.

Rebuilding a Life in Belgium

Arriving without legal status, Pierre took whatever work he could find. He drove taxis at night to support himself while pursuing his studies during the day. He eventually obtained Belgian citizenship and legal residency in the early 1980s.

He went on to study industrial mechanical engineering with a specialisation in aeronautics at the Institut supérieur industriel de Bruxelles (ISIB), graduating in 1988. That qualification led to a career as an industrial engineer and educator, including a teaching role at the Institut des arts et métiers de Bruxelles.

Engineering was not just a profession for him. He designed an innovative wind turbine that earned him gold medals at invention exhibitions in Brussels in 1997 and in Geneva in 1998. He also published an autobiography documenting his path from the Congo to Belgian public life.

Entering Politics in Ganshoren

Pierre became active in local politics in Ganshoren, a small municipality in the Brussels-Capital Region, around 2006. He was elected to the municipal council and later served as an alderman, taking responsibility for public works, mobility, the environment, and cleanliness. He was re-elected locally in 2012.

Pierre Kompany Politics in Ganshoren

In 2014, he expanded his political reach by winning a seat in the Brussels-Capital Region parliament, representing the centrist CDH party, now known as Les Engagés.

The 2018 municipal elections were the turning point. Pierre led the ProGanshoren/CDH list and received approximately 1,327 preference votes. Under the resulting coalition agreement, he was designated mayor of Ganshoren.

Belgium’s First Black Mayor

Pierre Kompany’s appointment as mayor of Ganshoren made him the first Black mayor — and the first Congolese-born mayor — in Belgian history. The news attracted significant attention both in Belgium and internationally, with coverage frequently noting the contrast between his arrival as an undocumented refugee and his eventual election as a municipal head of government.

Pierre himself was measured about the symbolic weight of the moment. Rather than framing his election as a gesture or a milestone to be celebrated for its own sake, he consistently described it as a step toward making diversity in Belgian political life ordinary rather than exceptional. He has spoken publicly and often on topics including migration, racism, colonial history, and integration — subjects he understands from direct personal experience.

He served as mayor of Ganshoren from 2018 until early 2022, stepping down mid-term in line with a pre-arranged coalition power-sharing agreement. Jean-Paul Van Laethem succeeded him in the role.

In 2021, Vrije Universiteit Brussel awarded Pierre an honorary doctorate in recognition of his contribution to a more inclusive and equitable society — an acknowledgment of his public role that went well beyond local municipal politics.

The Kompany Family

Pierre has three children: his daughter Christel Kompany and his two sons, Vincent Kompany and François Kompany. His former wife is Joseline Fraselle.

Vincent Kompany became one of Belgium’s most prominent footballers, captaining both Manchester City and the Belgian national team over a distinguished career. François Kompany also pursued professional football. Vincent has spoken publicly about his father’s journey on multiple occasions, expressing pride in Pierre’s achievement as mayor while being clear that the story belongs to his father, not to him.

Pierre Kompany’s life covers a remarkable amount of ground: political prisoner, refugee, taxi driver, engineer, inventor, teacher, alderman, regional parliamentarian, and eventually mayor. Each phase was built on the one before it, and none of it was straightforward.
